روز بعد یک هیئت نمایندگی از سودان و دوستان سودان با یک اسقف پناهنده سودانی در رأس آن نزد من آمدند. آنها به من گفتند که دو میلیون سودانی جان خود را از دست داده اند. آنها گفتند، "شما اکنون پاسدار تعهد و وعده رئیس جمهور هستید. به او کمک کنید تا با متوقف کردن نسل کشی در سودان به وعده خود عمل کند."

آن تراژدی سبعانه هنوز در ناحیه دارفور در کشور سودان همچنان ادامه دارد. اکنون فجایع آن ناحیه بر صفحه تلویزیون و صفحه اول نشریات بانفوذ نشان داده می شود. هیئت های نمایندگی کنگره، فرستادگان ویژه و سازمان های بشردوستانه گزارش های دهشتناکی از محل وقوع آن حوادث ارائه داده اند. یک میلیون نفر انسانِ پیر و جوان، بی خانمان و تبعید شده اند. هر روزه تعداد بسیاری از زنان مورد تجاوز قرار می گیرند و کودکان از فرط گرسنگی و بیماری و خشونت می میرند.

چگونه شهروند یک کشور آزاد می تواند نسبت به این موارد بی توجه باشد؟ چگونه انسان در هر کجای جهان که باشد، می تواند احساس خشم و انزجار نکند؟ چگونه ممکن است انسان ها- چه مذهبی و چه غیرمذهبی- احساس شفقت نکنند؟ و مهمتر از همه اینکه، چگونه می توان این موارد را به خاطر آورد و در عین حال ساکت ماند؟

من به عنوان یک یهودی که هیچ حادثه ای را با هولوکاست مقایسه نمی کند، تراژدی سودانی ها مرا نگران کرده و به چالش می طلبد. باید در این موضوع مداخله کنیم. چگونه می توانیم بی اعتنایی غیر یهودیان را نسبت به رنجهای یهودیان مورد سرزنش قرار دهیم هنگامی که نسبت به وضعیت اسفبار دیگران بی اعتناییم؟

این حادثه در کامبوج، سپس در یوگسلاوی سابق و در رواندا و در حال حاضر نیز در سودان اتفاق افتاده است. آسیا، اروپا، آفریقا: سه قاره به زندان، میدان کشتار و گورستان تعداد بی شماری ازافراد بی گناه و بی پناه تبدیل شده است. آیا باید اجازه دهیم تا این بیماری مهلک گسترش یابد؟

یکی از احکام کتاب مقدس چنین است: "تو نباید در مقابل ریختن خون همنوعانت بی تفاوت باشی." همنوع تو - و نه برادر یهودی تو- چه زن و چه مرد، چه یهودی و چه غیر یهودی. همه سزاوار برخورداری از یک زندگی سرشار ازامید و شأن و منزلت هستند. همه سزاوار برخورداری از زندگی عاری از ترس و درد و رنج هستند.

برای من کمک نکردن به قربانیان سودان کاری است بسیار ناشایسته، چراکه برخلاف آن چیزی است که از معلمان، پیشینیان و دوستانم آموخته ام: اینکه فقط خداوند است که تنهاست؛ مخلوقات او نباید تنها باشند.

آنچه بیش از همه مرا رنج و عذاب می دهد تقارن این رویدادهاست. در حالی که ما اینجا نشسته ایم و در مورد این بحث می کنیم که به لحاظ اخلاقی چگونه رفتار کنیم- چه به صورت فردی و چه جمعی- آنجا در دارفور و مناطق دیگر سودان عده ای در حال کشتن و کشته شدن هستند.

اگر قربانیان سودانی احساس کنند که به حال خود رها شده و مورد بی اعتنایی قرار گرفته اند، تقصیر- و شاید حتی گناه- متوجه ماست.

به همین دلیل است که ما باید در این جریان مداخله کنیم.

اگر مداخله کنیم، آنها و فرزندانشان از ما قدردانی خواهند کرد. همانگونه که فرزندان ما نیز به این ترتیب قدردان ما خواهند بود.
